Arkansas Valley Style Guide

Overview

The Arkansas Valley shows a combination of flat-topped mountains and folded ridges, reflecting its position between the Ozark Highlands and the Ouachita Mountains. The Arkansas River flows through this region and the wide areas along the banks have been converted to farmland. Swamps and oak forests may be found between farms. The most common trees are oaks, hickory and shortleaf pine due to a frequency of forest fires in the past. Tops of mountains show stunted trees.

Like the Ouachita Mountains, poultry has replaced livestock as a profitable industry. Logging is also common although it has not caused a poor soil situation as in other areas. There is also a tradition of wine making in this region and it is not strange to come across a winery from colonial times hidden in the forest.
