Cross Timbers Style Guide

Overview

The cross timbers region has a very craggy and hilly terrain of sandstone bluffs with a mix of forests and plains. There are quite a few small bodies of water in this region, allowing for a higher density of forest than nearby areas. The forests however seem stunted as the tops of trees are often knocked off on windy days. The most common trees are post oak, blackjack oak, live oak and hickory. Although fires did rage through this area during the war, the trees in general survived the flames and have now recovered. Tallgrass plains were once the dominant variety, but shortgrass has mostly replaced them.

This area has always been problematic as a place to live due to the difficult terrain. In conjunction, it is very hard to be successful economically. The two major industries in this region were oil and cattle, but the war made these impossible to continue. Most people migrated elsewhere, leaving behind neglected ranches and towns which the environment has reclaimed. This region is now a favorite for groups wishing to go unnoticed and has become quite dangerous to traverse.
